Most Prominent Languages spoken in Spain
Did you know Spanish is not the only language spoken in Spain?
According to the Spanish Constitution of 1978, Article 3, Castillian (Castellano) is the official Spanish language of the State. All Spaniards have the duty of speaking it and the right to use it. The other Spanish languages will also be official at their respective Autonomous Communities, according to their statutes. Finally, our Constitution declares that the richness of the different linguistic modalities in Spain is a cultural heritage which will be object of special respect and protection.
So, the Official language in Spain is Spanish. (Castellano -Castillian-). Apart from this language, there are others spoken in this country: Co-official languages:
- Catalán (Catalonian)
- Valenciano (Valencian)
- Vasco (Basque)
- Gallego (Galician)
There are other languages / dialects, considered either ‘recognized’ or ‘unofficial’: aragonés (Aragonese), andaluz (Andalucian) or asturiano (Asturian).
As a final note, there are some trivialities among some people leaving in Autonomous Communities, where both languages, Spanish and their own language are spoken. Due to cultural or political reasons, some people do not want Spanish to be spoken in their schools. (Well, I guess this type of ‘problems’ can be found everywhere, not just in Spain).
