Torrijas… Holy Week in Spain wouldn’t be the same without them!
My mom used to prepared some torrijas when we were child. It is a recipe we cook during Holy Week .
One day, my husband was so inspired that he said: “Hey, I feel like eating some torrijas!” And he started preparing these delicious… how could I translate this?? Well, according to WordReference , it is a “fried slice of bread soaked in milk, wine, etc”. Yes, I guess that would be a good explanation!
Basically, take some slices of bread and dip them into a bowl where we have previously added milk, for about 5-10 minutes. (Enough milk to cover all the slices of bread)
Meanwhile, bit 1 egg (or 2, depending on the quantity of slices of bread).
Dip the slices, which have been absorbing the milk, into the biten egg and fry them in a pan with boiling oil.
When fried, place the torrijas on a dish covered with a paper napkin for 1 or 2 minutes, until the papel absorbs the rests of oil. Then, poor some sugar on both sides of each torrija. If you have ground cinnamon, before pooring the sugar, mix it with some cinnamon, and then, yes, poor this mix on the torrijas.
Well, this is my family recipe, but there are as many torrijas recipes!
I found a video explaining how to cook them, quite similar to how I do it:
