Capuchones o capirotes en Semana Santa. Catedral de Valladolid.

Today is “Jueves Santo”, that is, “Good Thursday”. And all around Spain, we are “celebrating” this religious festivity.

Few days ago, I wrote about “Semana Santa in Sevilla“, but today, I want you to know a different feeling: how this Holy Week is celebrated in Valladolid (Castilla y León).

Same as Sevilla is famous because of all the feeling people in this city live the celebration, Valladolid has also to be mentioned, as it has been declared as a festivity of international interest.  Ask any Spaniard about Valladolid Semana Santa, and the first thing coming to their mouth is “los pasos”. “Los pasos” are floats taken from each church to the cathedral, showing to the people in the street true works of arts, by very famous artists (sculptors) from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The main celebration starts on Viernes Santo (Good Friday), with the “Sermón de las Siete Palabras” (Sermon of the Seven Words), which has been previously announced all around the city by the members of the Cofradías (religious brotherhoods) on horseback. Later, in the afternoon, all the processions go from their respective churches to the cathedral, showing 31 different floats. Each float represents a different scene of Christ Passion.
