Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Sevilla

Published by angeles at 8:33 pm under Andalucía, Festivities, Sevilla, Uncategorized Edit This

Or Seville… This wonderful city, located in Andalucía, celebrates during this month, April, two different events: Holy Week (Semana Santa) and April’s Fair (La Feria de Abril).

Let’s concentrate today on the first one, what we call in Spanish “Semana Santa” (Holy Week), which has become one of the biggest traditional (and religious, of course) celebrations in Spain. It is practically impossible to book a room during these days, unless you had planned your trip let’s say, some 3 months in advance.

Dates: From 5th to 12th April 2009.

La Giralda, en Sevilla (España) Every city and village in Spain celebrates it. From my point of view, if you really want to live the “real” feeling, go to Andalucia. I live in the North of the country and, with the exception of Valladolid, I think the way people from the South live and feel Holy Week, has nothing in common with the North.

So, back to Sevilla, what’s all this about? All the city is full of smells… Good ones, sure, as incense or lemon blossom; candles everywhere. All this will help you prepare yourself for the main event: “las procesiones” (Processions).

Better an image than 1000 words, so here’s the video.

It is a composition showing several parts of a procession. And the only thing, from my part, is not being able to express the faith and meditation atmosphere in every single place of the city during this days.
